As we take a peek into the security industry, today we focus mainly the security etiquette, and the attributes and character of an excellent security officer/guard, below are some pointers and guidelines to use, for those already in the industry or just requiring security services or even looking to pursue a career as security officer

Authoritative and Commanding

A remarkable guard must be able to conduct himself in an authoritative and commanding manner. Much of being a security guard is centered around monitoring, evaluating the actions of others, maintaining peace and order. When a security guard perceives strange activities and happenings, such as an individual attempting to access a building through its window or any suspicious individuals, he has to be able to confidently handle the situation while never wavering on his position and responsibilities.

A security guard cannot be a timid type. He has to be able to assert himself — in a self-assured way — whenever the situation requires it. Because of that, strong interpersonal and communication skills are a must for all security personnel.

Well Dressed Well – Groomed Personnel

Believe it or not the appearance of a person socially or in a business setting, builds trust, confidence and comfort. No one would want to entrust their resources to a scruffy looking person, bank, or security company, excellence and being well-groomed are synonymous you can’t take them apart. A security officer can have these:

  1. Well kempt hair,
  2. Clean shaven preferably,
  3. Neat ironed clothes
  4. Well-polished shoes
  5. Tucked in shirt etc
  6. Working and adequate equipment: baton stick, radio, hand cuffs, notebooks etc depending of their security roles

Unruffled Behavior

A properly trained security guard is composed and unruffled. Pressure-packed situations are the name of the game for guards, and it’s important for them to be able to navigate their way through things that might make others frustrated or stressed out.

If a security guard has to expel a visitor to the property for being disorderly and chaotic, then he has to be able to do it in a calm manner — no matter how out of control the other party might be behaving. Being a security guard calls for the ability to make sound decisions, even amid absolute frenzy and confusion.

Reliable and dependable serves as the groundwork for a security guard career. Working as a security guard calls for personalities that don’t get distracted or fall off track easily. Not only is it crucial for security guards to be timely in arriving to work, it’s crucial for them to monitor the property on a set schedule. A security guard has to make it a regular part of his routine to keep watch over all of his designated grounds. If a security guard simply forgets to conduct his scheduled checks of all of a building’s hallways, then he might not be the most suitable fit for the career. A security guard has to be someone who isn’t easily distracted from his responsibilities.

Another key security guard behaviour is decency. When a person is employed as a guard, he has a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, whether it relates to the security of people or property.
